Have you ever had a professional facial treatment? There are many different facials for various skin concerns and can be much more effective than your home-skincare routine.
5 Benefits of facials:
- Spring clean your skin and heal faster (No more blackheads, whiteheads or breakouts)
- Keep your skin young and improve circulation (prevent ageing. Have soft, supple skin)
- Relax and stimulate your facial muscles (keep the muscles healthy that lift)
- Keep your skin matte (treat the over production of oiliness)
- Emotional experience (feel-good, anti-stress, soothing, relax, confidence boost)
What is a facial?
A facial is a treatment done on the skin of the face, to clean and take care of the skin and resolve present problems that the skin may show. Although one can perform a basic facial at home, it is necessary to have a facial done by a professional somatologist on a more advanced level.
Typically a facial at a salon will proceed as follows or include a selection of some of these procedures:
1. Consultation
You will be asked to complete a consultation form where you can indicate your facial concerns and what skincare routine you follow. The therapist may ask you about your lifestyle for example if you are a smoker, how much water you drink and so forth. All of this information will determine aspects of your treatment and what solutions the therapist can recommend for you.
2.Cleansing
The skin is cleansed with hygienic sponges and cleanser, removing all make-up to reveal your natural skin. The therapist will also make you as comfortable as possible, ensuring your hair is neatly tucked away and so forth.
3.Skin Examination / Analysis
Under a specialized magnifying lamp, the therapist will examine your skin to determine your basic skin type (dry, oily, combination, sensitive or normal) and skin conditions (acne, blackheads, whiteheads, aging, sun-damage, dehydration, etc.). He or she may also recommend treatments and products to aid in resolving your skincare concerns.
4.Steam
Depending on which facial you have, the next step will be gently steaming the face, to open up the pores and soften the blackheads etc. that need to be extracted. Steaming may not be advised if you have very sensitive skin.
5.Exfoliation
The therapist will exfoliate either manually (with products) or mechanically (with a machine). Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells and prepare the skin for absorbing vital minerals and moisture or whichever treatments are applicable to your concerns.
6.Extractions
Extractions is the removal of Blackheads or Whiteheads should it be necessary or if you choose to do so. It can be rather uncomfortable or painful, depending from person to person but leaves great results.
7.Facial massage
The therapist may gently and strategically massage your facial muscles for relaxation or stimulation.
8.Mask
According to your skin type and skin conditions, the therapist will apply an appropriate mask to nourish your skin. While the mask is working, the therapist should massage or scalp or remain with you providing some other service.
9.The therapist will apply of toner, serums, moisturizer and sunscreen if it’s daytime.
10.The therapist will recommend to you how you can better your skincare routine and assist with your enquiries.
Cosmetic Electrotherapy
Cosmetic electrotherapy is a range of beauty treatments that uses low electric currents passed through the skin to produce several therapeutic effects, such as muscle toning and micro-lifting of the face.
There are various different types of cosmetic electrotherapy. At Annique Day Spa, we make use of the following electrotherapy treatments:
Galvanic Treatment: To clean and nourish the skin through ionisation. This is achieved by the application of a small, constant, direct current. The treatment works on the principle that charged ions in the skin are either attracted or repelled from the electrodes, resulting in certain chemical effects. The products are then allowed to penetrate the skin more effectively and also for trapped fluids and fat to exit the skin membrane..
Micro-current Treatment: use of micro-ampere currents (i.e. millionths of an amp) which are hardly perceptible, but mimic the body’s own bio-electric currents. The treatment is designed to soften wrinkles and rejuvenate skin, including skin damaged by sunburn, acne, stretch marks, cellulite and scarring. When used on the face, the treatment has become known as a “non-surgical facelift“, and “facial lifting”.
High-frequency Treatments: High-frequency treatment uses low-current high-frequency alternating currents, via a glass electrode. Because the high frequency current converts some of the oxygen in the air into ozone, the treatment has a germicidal action, and is also drying and warming. Consequently the treatment is used to aid healing, and also to help with the skin’s natural exfoliation, and stimulate sweat and sebaceous glands. We thus use high frequency to treat problem skin.
*Faradic treatment is only performed on the body at Annique Day Spa, which is the contraction of muscles through an electrical current to tighten and tone. It is ideal for the thighs, stomach and buttocks.
Electrotherapy treatments are completely safe and harmless, although it is not recommended during pregnancy, as the effects of even a small electrical current on the foetus could be harmful.
When should I have a facial?
Ideally one should start having facial treatments as soon as possible, the sooner you can spot your concerns and learn how to deal with them, the better and easier it is to treat. A monthly facial is very beneficial to work on the new skin that has regenerated over the past month. If you have concerns like acne, pigmentation or ageing, it may be beneficial to undergo more regular facials to clear up the problem. If you are still getting into things or want to have minimal facials, the best option is to have a facial with every seasonal change.
How to choose a facial
If you know what your skincare concerns are or which treatments you need, you can go ahead and select the facial you would like to book. The therapist will still examine your skin and recommend what is applicable to you. However, if it will be your first facial, and you are very concerned about your skin or have problematic conditions, it is best to book a skin analysis with the therapist and take it from there to reassure you. Every facial uses different products, specifically suited to your skin type and skincare concerns.
